Akasol launches commercial vehicle battery plant in North America
Battery maker Akasol has announced the opening of a battery plant in Greater Detroit, Michigan, USA. Production of second-generation commercial vehicle batteries is expected to begin in 2020.
Akasol's new manufacturing facility will be subsidized by the state of Michigan. In total, Akasol will invest a mid-double-digit million amount in the plant over a five-year period. The size of the battery factory is based on the factory in Langen, Hesse. Around 200 jobs are to be created in Michigan.
At the start of production in 2020, the second generation battery system, the AKASystem OEM PRC battery system, is to be manufactured at the new location. "Two-thirds of the initial capacity of our new US facility will be used for new customers, the remaining third for our existing customers," said Roy Schulde, president of US subsidiary Akasol Inc. At a later date, battery systems with high energy density will be manufactured. By 2021, the plan is to increase production in a three-shift operation to 400 megawatt hours.
